Gornik Zabrze

Four established clubs in Zabrze — Zjednoczenie, Concordia, Pogoń and Skra — merged into a single side on 14 December 1948, and the new club took its name from what ran beneath the city: coal. Górnik, the miner, gave the team its identity in a town built around the pits, and the nickname that followed, The Miners, needed no explaining locally. They play now at the Arena Zabrze, known formally as Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla.

The name was earned quickly on the pitch. Górnik won the Polish championship ten times between 1957 and 1971, a run that also brought six Polish Cups, then returned for four more league titles in the mid-1980s and a Polish Super Cup in 1988. The seventh cup took far longer: Górnik lifted the Polish Cup again in 2025, fifty-four years after the last one.

No fixture in Upper Silesia carries more weight than the one against Ruch Chorzów, the Great Silesian Derby, fought over ground both clubs were built on. Matches against GKS Katowice draw less heat but still get called the Silesian classic.

Włodzimierz Lubański came through Górnik in that golden era and went on to finish as the Ekstraklasa's all-time leading scorer, the name still tied to the club's best years. More recently it was Łukasz Podolski who wore the shirt, in 2021 and 2022, before staying on in a different role: since 2022 he has held Górnik as majority owner through LP Holding GmbH.
