Zagłębie Lubin hosted Wisła Płock in the Ekstraklasa on Sunday, and the visitors took all three points with a 2-0 win at the Zagłębie Stadium. The result came as a surprise, given that we had tipped a home victory with 48 per cent confidence. The match simply refused to follow that script.
Wisła struck twice in quick succession before the break. Łukasz Sekulski opened the scoring in the 44th minute, then added a second just after the interval in the 45th. By then Zagłębie were already chasing shadows, and Said Hamulic wrapped things up in the 90+4th minute to make it 2-0.
The game was far from clean. Filip Szymczak, David Čolina, Afonso Silva, Mateusz Grzybek, Patryk Kun and Michał Nalepa all picked up yellow cards. Zagłębie made four changes around the hour mark, bringing on Szymon Lyczko, Samuel Akere, Jurica Pršir and Sidnei Tavares as the hosts tried to get back into the contest.
And here's the thing about the numbers. Zagłębie enjoyed 53 per cent possession and took 14 shots compared to five for Płock, but the visitors were far more clinical. Their shot accuracy stood at 56 per cent against 40 per cent for the hosts, and they created two big chances where the hosts managed none.
To be fair, Zagłębie did more work in the air and won 22 aerial duels, but it made little difference. They crossed 27 times and completed eight, while Płock managed only one successful cross from ten attempts. The hosts had 13 key passes but found no answer to a disciplined away side.
The result leaves Zagłębie in seventh place on 15 points from nine games, while Płock remain 11th with 11 points from eight matches. It was a match decided by moments rather than possession, and Płock took theirs.
