Widzew Łódź

18,018 seats, and the people of Łódź simply call it Serce Łodzi — the heart of Łódź.

Widzew traces back to 25 November 1910, when it was founded as a physical-development society, and took the name RTS Widzew a dozen years later, in January 1922.

Zbigniew Boniek scored 50 goals in 172 appearances before Juventus came for him, and Władysław Żmuda captained the side to the league titles of 1981 and 1982, having already played at two World Cups. Those two championships, followed by back-to-back titles in 1995/96 and 1996/97, remain the four Widzew has won. In between came a Polish Cup in 1985 and, in the 1982/83 European Cup, a run to the semi-final: Liverpool and Anderlecht were both eliminated, Mirosław Tłokciński scored the winner against the Reds, before Juventus ended the run.

Financial trouble caught up with the club in 2015: bottom of the Ekstraklasa, bankruptcy, and expulsion down to the fifth tier. Supporters formed an association to carry the club's history forward, and Widzew climbed the divisions again, finishing second in the second tier in 2021/22 to earn its way back to the Ekstraklasa the following season.
