About the player
Mateusz Żyro's first senior appearance for Legia Warszawa came in the 2017 Polish Super Cup, a match Legia lost to Arka Gdynia on penalties. He had entered the club's academy in 2005/06 and worked through every stage of it, taking the Polish Junior Championship in 2015/16 and a Polish U19 title in 2017/18, with time in the UEFA Youth League along the way.
Between 2017 and 2022 he was under contract at the club but spent most of it elsewhere — loans at Wigry Suwałki, Miedź Legnica and then Stal Mielec. He was part of the squad that won the Puchar Polski in 2017/18, appearing twice in the competition.
On 5 August 2020 the move was made permanent on a free transfer, his Legia contract having been released, and he stayed until June 2022.
On 9 June 2022 he joined Widzew Łódź, again on a free, signing a two-year deal with an option to extend. On 23 May 2025 Widzew announced an extension running to 30 June 2028.
Żyro has played for Poland at U-19, U-20 and U-21 level and has not been capped by the senior side. His brother, Michał Żyro, is a former senior international.
