About

The Ekstraliga Kobiet represents the premier level of women's football within Poland, operating under the direct administration of the Polish Football Association (PZPN). This structural arrangement distinguishes it from the men's counterpart, the Ekstraklasa, which functions as a private entity managed by Ekstraklasa S.A. The league currently comprises twelve clubs, a configuration established during the 2014–15 campaign.

Competition follows a double round-robin format where sides face each other home and away. Historically, the structure included a split phase dividing the season into championship and relegation groups, yet this method was discarded in favour of a standard table. Movement between tiers remains straightforward: the two lowest-placed teams descend to the I liga, while the leading pair from that second division advance.

Success has seen various holders over the decades. Czarni Sosnowiec stands as the most decorated side with fourteen official titles, benefiting from dominance in the 1980s and late 1990s. Other winners include KŚ AZS Wrocław with eight crowns, RTP Unia Racibórz securing five consecutive championships between 2009 and 2013, KKPK Medyk Konin with four titles, and Górnik Łęczna claiming three. The current title holders are GKS Katowice, having secured victories in the 2022–23 and 2024–25 seasons.

Financial backing arrived later than in the men's game, with PKN Orlen signing the first official title sponsorship deal in 2023, leading to the temporary name Orlen Ekstraliga Kobiet. The competition traces its origins to 1979, when the first official season concluded, although unofficial contests occurred earlier. The renaming from Superliga Kobiet to Ekstraliga Kobiet occurred in 2005.
