About the player
Gideon Mensah's career has run almost entirely through loan spells. Signed by Red Bull Salzburg in 2017 after two years at WAFA and a season at FC Liefering, he was sent out four times in four years: to Sturm Graz, Zulte Waregem, Vitória de Guimarães and Girondins de Bordeaux.
It was only when Auxerre signed him on a free transfer in 2022 that Mensah found a settled home, going on to make 111 appearances for the Burgundy club and winning the Ligue 2 title with them in the 2023/2024 season. In July 2026 he left on a free transfer for 1. FC Köln, where he has made four appearances so far.
Internationally, he made his Ghana debut in 2019 in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa and has since become a regular fixture, going to the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments as well as the 2022 World Cup, and earning a place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. In June 2026 he wore the captain's armband for Ghana for the first time, in a Unity Cup win over Trinidad and Tobago.
His earliest honour came with Salzburg's youth side, where he was part of the team that won the UEFA Youth League in the 2016/2017 season, beating Benfica 2-1 in the final.
