Ligue 1 operates as the premier division of the French football pyramid, administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). The competition underwent a structural adjustment for the current campaign, reducing the field from twenty clubs to eighteen. This reduction means each participating side, including Angers, Auxerre, and Lens, plays a condensed schedule of thirty-four matches. The fixture list follows a standard double round-robin format, ensuring every team faces all others twice, once at home and once away. The stakes in the top flight are defined by strict promotion and relegation rules. The two lowest-ranked teams face automatic descent to the second tier. The side finishing sixteenth enters a two-legged playoff against the winner of the Ligue 2 promotion play-offs, creating a high-pressure scenario for survival. Conversely, the top two sides in Ligue 2 gain immediate promotion, while others battle in secondary play-offs. The league’s integrity is monitored by the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), an authority capable of imposing administrative relegations based on financial criteria. Historical dominance in the competition has shifted over decades. Olympique Lyonnais secured a record seven consecutive titles between 2002 and 2008, establishing a significant dynasty. More recently, Paris Saint-Germain has accumulated the highest number of championships, including their twelfth crown in the 2023–24 season. The league also carries a distinct cultural marker: the 1992–93 campaign saw no champion declared following the stripping of the title from Olympique de Marseille due to a match-fixing scandal. The season traditionally commences with the Trophée des Champions, a fixture contested between the previous league winner and the Coupe de France champion. Beyond the pitch, the competition is noted for its investment in youth development centres, known as *centres de formation*, which supply talent to the first team squads. The tournament maintains a global broadcasting presence, reflecting its status as a major European sporting event.
