Baku spreads along the Caspian coast. The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan came together in 1992, and Alekper Mamedov took charge as the first head coach the same year. The side played its first official match that September, against Georgia.

UEFA admitted the federation provisionally in 1993 and in full a year later, with FIFA following in June 1994. No World Cup or European Championship finals have followed; the closest the team came was finishing fourth in its 2014 World Cup qualifying group. In the Nations League it has settled into the lower tiers.

Rashad Sadygov holds the appearance record, while Gurban Gurbanov remains the leading scorer with 12 goals in 66 caps.

The team wears red at home and blue away, taken straight from the national flag, and has played most of its fixtures since 2015 at the Baku Olympic Stadium after years at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium. Locals call the side Milli Komanda — the National Team. The Olympic Stadium holds 69,870.
