In the 2011–12 Premier Division final, Barito Putera beat Persita Tangerang 2–1. The win took them back to the top flight after a decade in the lower divisions. The route there had started three years earlier in the Second Division, which they won in 2008–09. For a club from South Kalimantan, that final ended a long wait.

The wait stood out because the early years had gone differently. Barito Putera were founded in 1988 by H. A. Sulaiman and entered the Galatama, the league of that era, for the 1988–89 season. They finished third in 1992–93. In 1994–95 they reached the semi-finals of the Premier Division and lost to Persib Bandung. The 2012 promotion brought them back to a level they had already reached, after years away from it.

The nickname Laskar Antasari, the Antasari Warriors, refers to the resistance leader of South Kalimantan. A second nickname, Bakantan Hamuk, means "the Furious Proboscis Monkey". The colours are yellow and black.

The club is tied to Banjarmasin, but the home ground is in Martapura. Demang Lehman Stadium holds 6,979. Stadion 17 Mei in Banjarmasin, which seats 12,000, was used before it. Martapura FC play in the same town, and the derby between the two is called Derby Banua. The fiercest rivalry is with Borneo FC of Samarinda, the Derby Papadaan. In the Banjar language the name means "Brotherhood Derby".

The club now builds its squad partly through the Barito Putera Sports School, opened in 2016. Its best-known graduate is Rizky Pora, the club captain and an Indonesia international. Kahar Musakkar and Ilham Udin Armayn also came through the school.
