Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens played out a 1:1 draw in their NHL fixture on the 29th of September. The result leaves both sides with a single point from their first game of the season. Neither team has yet won, lost or drawn a match in the standings.
And here's the thing about opening nights — they rarely tell you much about the full season. Both clubs came into this with mixed memories from their pre-season meetings. Montreal had taken two points from Toronto in those earlier fixtures, but form from friendlies counts for little in October.
We had given the away side the edge at 46 per cent confidence before kickoff. That prediction did not come off, though not because one side dominated. The game simply refused to break open in either direction, and that sort of deadlock is as common as it is frustrating.
The statistics will show possession figures and shots on target, but those numbers rarely capture what actually happened. There were chances created and chances missed, neither team able to string together enough sustained pressure. By then you realise the result is fair even if it feels anticlimactic.
What matters now is the table position. Both teams sit on zero points and zero games played before this fixture, so the standings remain wide open. A draw gives neither side momentum, but it also means neither has lost ground yet.
