Fog rolled off Lake Erie and into the Aud on 24 May 1975, thick enough that players lost sight of the puck mid-play and linesmen were sent out to fan it away with towels. The Sabres were three years old and already in a Stanley Cup Final, and the Fog Game against the Philadelphia Flyers became the image people reached for whenever they tried to explain what those early Buffalo teams were like: fast, strange, unfinished business. They lost that series in six games, then lost two more finals in 1980 and 1981 to the New York Islanders, and a fourth in 1999 to the Dallas Stars in seven games decided by a Brett Hull goal Buffalo still argues should not have counted. Four trips to the final, no Cup — a distinction the franchise shares with the Vancouver Canucks as the two oldest teams never to win one.
Between those finals sat three conference titles and a run of division championships stretched across five different decades, the most recent arriving in 2025–26 after a wait that had nothing ceremonial about it: fourteen straight seasons without a playoff game, the longest such drought in NHL history before the streak finally broke. The rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs carries the geography and the bad blood; the one with the New York Rangers carries the noise.
No one at KeyBank Center needs the number explained. Gilbert Perreault was the first player the Sabres ever drafted, in the same expansion year the club joined the league in 1970, and by the time he retired the number 11 was retired with him. Dominik Hasek arrived later and won two Vezinas and two Harts in Buffalo before the Hall of Fame call came, but Perreault is the one the franchise still measures itself against.
