Tampa had no NHL history to build on when the league awarded an expansion franchise to the market on December 6, 1990, and it took until the 1992–93 season for the Lightning to actually take the ice. The early years nearly ended the project altogether — the club played through financial instability and a stretch close to bankruptcy, shuttling from the ThunderDome to the Ice Palace in 1996 before finding steadier footing.
The turnaround traces to 2010, when Jeffrey Vinik bought the franchise and installed Steve Yzerman as general manager. The 2004 Stanley Cup, won against the Calgary Flames with Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis driving the run, had already put the club on the map, but it was 2020 and 2021 that turned Tampa into a genuine dynasty, with back-to-back titles over the Dallas Stars and the Montreal Canadiens.
Steven Stamkos stands as the franchise's all-time leading goalscorer; Nikita Kucherov, who took the Conn Smythe Trophy in that 2021 run and a Hart Trophy in 2024, has since become the player most identified with the team. Andrei Vasilevskiy's presence in goal, a Vezina Trophy winner in his own right, gave the roster the last line that dynasties are usually built on.
None of that was assured when the games moved into what is now Benchmark International Arena, in a division shared at the time with the Florida Panthers — the rivalry still known as the Battle of Florida, and still the one that carries the most weight on Tampa's calendar. The Bolts nickname has stuck with the club since long before any of the silverware arrived, back when survival, not the Stanley Cup, was the daily concern.
