Raleigh had never had major-league hockey before 1997, and the team that arrived that year had already been through two names and one league. It started life in New England in 1971, playing in the World Hockey Association as the Whalers before that league folded into the NHL in 1979. Hartford kept the franchise through the eighties and nineties, and it was only the move south that made it the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Whalers had already won a title before the NHL years, taking the Avco World Trophy in 1973. Carolina's own defining moment came later: in 2006, the Hurricanes beat the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup, four years after they had lost the Final to the Detroit Red Wings. Rod Brind'Amour captained that 2006 team, and his name has stayed attached to the club since.

Games are played at Lenovo Center, seating just under 18,700, in a building that has changed corporate names more than once without the team leaving it. Washington, Boston and Pittsburgh supply the sharpest games on the schedule, none of them carrying an official rivalry name, just the accumulated weight of playoff meetings.

The current roster is built around Sebastian Aho, alongside Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov, the group tasked with getting Carolina back to the Final it last reached in 2002.
