«The Habs»
It took the ice for the first time on 4 December 1909, which makes it the oldest professional ice hockey side still operating anywhere. The nickname that stuck, "The Habs," grew out of "Les Habitants," a term for the old French-Canadian settlers, after early sportswriters mistook it for a meaning behind the "CH" crest on the jersey.
Twenty-four Stanley Cup titles sit on the club's record, more than any other team has managed, spanning from 1916 to 1993.
The rivalry that defines the club is with the Boston Bruins, the two sides having met more than 600 times in regular-season and playoff hockey, a volume no other pairing in the league has reached. The Toronto Maple Leafs count as the other old rival, a leftover of the "Original Six" era both clubs belong to.
Of the numbers hanging in the rafters, none carries more weight than Maurice Richard's 9. His number was the one the club retired to make sure nobody wore it again.
