Bobby Hull signed with the original Jets in 1972 for a sum that broke professional hockey's pay scale at the time, and the World Hockey Association franchise built around him won the Avco World Trophy three times, in 1976, 1978 and 1979, before the league folded into the National Hockey League. That team moved to Phoenix in 1996 and took its records with it, which left Winnipeg without a club until True North Sports & Entertainment bought the Atlanta Thrashers in 2011 and brought the Jets name back north. While the Atlanta seasons stayed on the books as a separate history.

So the Jets that play now carry two pasts stitched into one crest, an eagle taken from the Royal Canadian Air Force's 17 Wing emblem, which is also where the nickname "The Air Force" comes from alongside the more common "The Jets." Mark Scheifele has become the scoring reference point for this version of the club, and Connor Hellebuyck has won a Vezina Trophy in goal, but Winnipeg still has not put its name on the Stanley Cup.

The team plays out of the Canada Life Centre, where the visiting Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues draw the sharpest edge from the home crowd, though nobody has bothered giving that rivalry a proper name. Capacity there runs to 15,294 — and loud for it.
