The Stars go into another NHL season carrying the weight of Dallas hockey's best modern era — deep playoff runs have become the expectation rather than the exception, and the roster built around Miro Heiskanen and Jake Oettinger is meant to finish the job that fell short in 2020, when the club lost the Stanley Cup Final to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

That Final defeat sits alongside a very different one from 1999, when the Stars actually won it — Brett Hull settling the series with an overtime goal in Game 6 against the Buffalo Sabres. Joe Nieuwendyk took the Conn Smythe Trophy that spring.

No name carries more weight in that history than Mike Modano, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, whose number hangs in the rafters at the American Airlines Center. The rivalry that defined his prime was with the Colorado Avalanche through the 1990s and into the early 2000s.

Before Texas ever knew the Stars, Minnesota did. The team entered the NHL in the 1967 expansion as the Minnesota North Stars, playing out of the Met Center in Bloomington. The move south in 1993 brought a new name built for a new home — Texas calls itself the Lone Star State, and Dallas took its share of it.
