Sid Salomon Jr. and his son Sid Salomon III, together with Robert L. Louis franchise a name lifted from W. C. Handy's "Saint Louis Blues," a nod to the city's own musical history rather than to anything on ice. Some fans still call them "The Notes," after the blue note worked into the crest.

The early years brought nothing but losing in the biggest games: three straight trips to the Stanley Cup Final in 1968, 1969 and 1970, swept each time, by Montreal twice and then Boston, a run of twelve consecutive Final losses that stood as a league record. The wait for a first championship ran to 2019, when the Blues beat Boston in seven games. Ryan O'Reilly took the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and it was Alex Pietrangelo's overtime goal that settled the series.

Chicago has long been the team most fans measure themselves against, a rivalry sharpened by incidents like the 1991 St. Patrick's Day Massacre, and one that predates the Blues' move from the old St. Louis Arena to what is now Enterprise Center in 1994. Blue, gold and white were the club's original colours; royal blue took over in 1984 before the franchise went back to the 1967 scheme in 2022.

Seven numbers hang from the rafters, and Bernie Federko's 19 is among them for good reason: he still holds the franchise records for games, assists and points.
