Mikko Koivu pulled on the Wild jersey for the better part of his career and never got the one thing the franchise has spent its existence chasing: a Stanley Cup, or even a trip to the final. When the North Stars departed for Dallas in 1993, the state went without NHL hockey until the Wild arrived as an expansion side on 25 June 1997, taking the ice for the first time on 6 October 2000.

The closest the club came to something lasting was 2003, when it reached the Western Conference Finals by doing something no NHL team had done before: winning two straight best-of-seven series after trailing 3–1, first against the Colorado Avalanche, then the Vancouver Canucks. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim swept them out of the finals.

Ownership passed from Bob Naegele, Jr., the man who brought the franchise into being, to Craig Leipold in 2008. What followed was long stretches of competent, unspectacular hockey, capped by a playoff drought that ran from 2016 to 2024 before the Wild finally won a first-round series again, beating the Dallas Stars in 2025.

None of it has cooled the dislike for Colorado, the old rival from that 2003 run, or for Chicago, whose Blackhawks met Minnesota in three straight first-round series from 2013 to 2015 and left bruises that still surface whenever the two teams meet in the postseason.
