Denver had no major professional champion until a Quebec-born hockey club showed up in 1995 and won one within a year. The franchise itself dates to 1972, when it entered the World Hockey Association as the Nordiques, joined the NHL in the 1979 merger, and was sold and moved south a decade and a half later. The 1996 Stanley Cup, a sweep of the Florida Panthers, was the city's first title in any major league.
Patrick Roy arrived that same year; his number 33 hangs in the rafters alongside Joe Sakic's 19, Peter Forsberg's 21, Ray Bourque's 77, Adam Foote's 52 and Milan Hejduk's 23. Sakic scored the most in franchise history, took the Conn Smythe in 1996 and the Hart Trophy in 2001.
The Avalanche have never lost a Stanley Cup Final they reached — 1996, 2001 and 2022 all ended in wins, the last a six-game defeat of Tampa Bay.
Eight Pacific Division titles came in the club's first run of dominance from 1996 to 2003; the Central Division has been theirs four times since 2021. Three Stanley Cups in three trips to the final: still a perfect record.
