United Center opened for the 1994–95 season with 19,717 seats, replacing the old Chicago Stadium the club had used since 1929. The building is shared with the Chicago Bulls.

The franchise traces back to 1926, when Frederic McLaughlin, a veteran of the First World War, bought the Portland Rosebuds and moved them to Chicago. He named the team after his old unit, the Blackhawk Division, itself named for the Sauk leader Black Hawk. The club spelled its name as two words, Chicago Black Hawks, until 1986, when it reverted to the single-word form found in the original 1926 franchise papers.

Six Stanley Cups sit in the club's history, in 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013 and 2015. The gap between the third and fourth of those, 49 years, makes the 2010 win the one people talk about; what followed was three championships in six years built around Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook under coach Joel Quenneville.

Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull were the first players to have their numbers retired by the club. The rivalry with Detroit runs longer than any other pairing in the league's history by games played; St. Louis is the sharper, more current one.

Ownership has stayed inside one family since 1966, passing from Arthur Wirtz to Rocky Wirtz to Danny Wirtz.
