«The Wings»
Detroit go into another National Hockey League season carrying the weight of the Original Six name and the burden that comes with it: the longest active postseason drought in the league, a wait the club has not known since before the war. The rebuild has been slow and deliberate rather than dramatic, and Hockeytown is still waiting for the roster to catch up to the banners hanging above it.
Those banners date back to a franchise that started life as the Detroit Cougars in 1926, became the Falcons four years later, and only took its familiar name in 1932, when grain merchant James E. Norris bought the team and borrowed the winged wheel from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association crest. Under Jack Adams the Red Wings won Stanley Cups in 1936 and 1937 almost as soon as the paint had dried on the new logo, then went further still in the 1950s with Gordie Howe leading a run of titles that made "Mr. Hockey" as synonymous with Detroit as the car plants.
The lean years that followed Howe's departure earned the team the nickname "Dead Wings," a stretch that only ended after pizza magnate Mike Ilitch bought the club in 1982 and gave general manager Jimmy Devellano the room to build again, this time around Steve Yzerman. That patience produced four more championships between 1997 and 2008, the last of them sealed with Henrik Zetterberg winning the Conn Smythe and Nicklas Lidstrom lifting a Cup as a European-born captain, a first in NHL history.
Detroit left Joe Louis Arena for Little Caesars Arena in 2017, and the rivalry with Chicago that defined so many of those Original Six nights still carries more heat than any other on the schedule. The retired numbers hanging in the rafters, Howe's 9 and Yzerman's 10 among them, are a reminder of what the current roster is chasing: an eleventh Stanley Cup.

Valeri Nichushkin's goal and assist led Columbus to a 4:2 pre-season win at Detroit, who remain without a captain after stripping Dylan Larkin.
Larkin will attend Detroit's training camp despite requesting a trade in June; the club opened talks on captaincy and his future only once new hockey operations leadership is named.
The Canadiens forward won the Cup four straight years from 1957 to 1960 and later played for Boston, Detroit and Minnesota before retiring in 1968.
