Sunrise sits inland from Fort Lauderdale, a suburb built more around shopping malls and canals than any sporting tradition. The franchise arrived as an expansion side for the 1993–94 season, played its first game against the Chicago Blackhawks that October, and settled in Sunrise in 1998, in a building that has changed sponsors' names six times since — most recently to the Amerant Bank Arena.
The early identity came from a single moment: during the 1995–96 season, Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room with his stick before going out and scoring twice, and the "Rat Trick" — fans hurling plastic rats onto the ice after goals — has stuck ever since. That season also produced the club's first deep run, a trip to the Stanley Cup Final that ended in a sweep at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche.
It took until the 2020s for Sunrise to see the other side of that story. Under captain Aleksander Barkov, the franchise's all-time points leader, and with Matthew Tkachuk added to the roster, the Panthers won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025, the first of them sealed with a Game 7 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
Games against the Tampa Bay Lightning are billed locally as the Battle of Florida, the one fixture where the rest of the state's indifference to hockey briefly drops away. The Amerant Bank Arena holds just over 19,000 for those nights, and Panthers Nation — as the fan base calls itself — has spent the last two summers filling it with rats after finals that finally went their way.
