Dylan Larkin Stripped of Red Wings Captaincy

Larkin will attend Detroit's training camp despite requesting a trade in June; the club opened talks on captaincy and his future only once new hockey operations leadership is named.

Dylan Larkin is no longer captain of the Detroit Red Wings. The Forward will still report to training camp, despite having requested a trade out of the club on 4 June.

"Over the last couple of weeks, myself and Red Wings management have had several thoughtful discussions. I appreciate those honest conversations and I will be at training camp with my teammates. Once new leadership is in place, we will continue discussing the team's direction going Forward. The substance of those conversations will remain private, and my focus is on the upcoming season and the guys in the locker room," Larkin said in a statement.

The club addressed the situation in its own statement: "We look Forward to seeing Dylan and the rest of the players at Little Caesars Arena at the start of training camp as we prepare for the upcoming season. Dylan is under contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Any discussions about his future with the team will take place privately once a new head of hockey operations is appointed. With that in mind, we will refrain from further comment on this matter. The Red Wings will begin the 2026/27 season without a named captain. Further discussions or decisions on this matter will be made once the new hockey operations leadership is in place."

Larkin's contract carries an $8.7m cap hit and runs through the 2030/31 season, with a no-trade clause that requires his consent for any deal. Steve Yzerman left his post as general manager on 15 July, leaving the club without the executive who would typically settle the captaincy question.

Detroit sit sixth in the NHL, without a point after 82 games. A season opening with no captain named adds to the uncertainty already surrounding the roster while a new hockey operations chief is sought.
