Nichushkin Scores Again as Columbus Beat Detroit
Valeri Nichushkin's goal and assist led Columbus to a 4:2 pre-season win at Detroit, who remain without a captain after stripping Dylan Larkin.
Columbus beat Detroit 4:2 on the road in a pre-season game. Valeri Nichushkin scored on 19 minutes and added an assist on Cole Sillinger's empty-net goal, with Kirill Marchenko also picking up a helper.
Charlie Coyle opened the scoring for Columbus on 15 minutes on the power play, and Jack Williams made it two on 24 minutes. Detroit pulled a pair back through Ben Chiarot on 47 minutes and Michael Rasmussen on 54 minutes, but could not find a third.
It was Nichushkin's second goal in as many pre-season outings.
Detroit open the regular season at home to the Rangers on 3 October. Columbus start their campaign on home ice against Buffalo on 2 October.
The Red Wings have been without a captain since Dylan Larkin was stripped of the armband earlier this month, with the club having opened talks on the role only once new hockey operations leadership is named.
