UBS Arena sits on the Belmont Park site in Elmont and opened in October 2021 with room for 17,255 on game nights. The Islanders arrived there after a long detour: from 1972 the club had played at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, and from 2015 split its home schedule between Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the old Coliseum before settling into the new building.

The franchise was awarded in November 1971 and took the ice the following season under a name unveiled that February. Fans call the team the "Isles," a shorthand that stuck through the years. Between 1980 and 1983 the Islanders won the Stanley Cup four years running, a run built around Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, Denis Potvin and Clark Gillies under coach Al Arbour, with Bill Torrey assembling the roster as general manager.

Later teams never matched that stretch, though names like Pat LaFontaine, Pierre Turgeon and, further on, Zdeno Chára and John Tavares passed through the lineup. The rivalry that mattered most stayed close to home: games against the Rangers, billed as the Battle of New York, carried an edge through the 1970s and 1980s that outlasted the dynasty itself.

What the club has kept from that era is the blue and orange on the sweater, colours that travelled from the Coliseum to Brooklyn and now hang in the rafters at UBS Arena, where Elmont's crowd has taken over the seats closest to the ice.
