Martin Brodeur played twenty-three seasons in a Devils net and retired with 691 wins, more than any goaltender in NHL history, and that record sits at the centre of how the club is remembered. He arrived not long after the franchise itself had settled into New Jersey: the team began as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, shifted to Denver two years later as the Colorado Rockies, and only found a permanent home on 27 May 1982, when the ownership moved it east and renamed it for the Jersey Devil.

The turnaround from perennial also-ran to champion is tied to Lou Lamoriello, general manager from 1987 to 2015. Under that system the Devils won the Stanley Cup three times: in 1995 against the Detroit Red Wings, in 2000 against the Dallas Stars, and in 2003 against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Since 2007 the Devils have played at the Prudential Center in Newark, a 16,514-seat arena. The building sits roughly ten miles from Madison Square Garden, close enough that the games against the New York Rangers carry their own name, the Hudson River Rivalry.
