The arena holds 18,006 for hockey.

The franchise itself traces back to Tex Rickard, who registered it in April 1926 first as the New York Giants Professional Hockey Club, then changed the name to the Rangers at the same league meeting. The early years produced results fast: the Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1928, only their second season, the quickest an expansion side has managed the feat, then again in 1933 and 1940.

What followed 1940 was a 54-year gap that New Yorkers came to call the Curse of 1940. It ended in 1994, when Mark Messier captained the team to the title alongside goaltender Mike Richter, a run still treated as the defining season in the club's history. The franchise's all-time leading defenceman from that era, Brian Leetch, and Henrik Lundqvist, who took over the crease in 2005 and left as the club's leader in wins and shutouts, are among those honored.

The Rangers reached the Stanley Cup Final twice more without winning, in 1972 and 2014, and have taken the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record four times, most recently in 2023–24 under Peter Laviolette. Their rivalry with the Islanders carries the old "Battle of New York" name, sharpened by decades of playing for the same city's hockey audience.

Mike Sullivan now runs the bench, with the 2023–24 Presidents' Trophy the most recent marker of where the team stands heading into the new season.
