Abe Pollin talked his way into an NHL expansion slot in June 1972, and by the time the Washington Capitals actually took the ice in October 1974, the arena built for them in the district still wasn't ready. They opened at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, and proceeded to set NHL records that have never been touched since: eight wins and 21 points across an entire debut season.
It took over two decades to shed that shadow. The move downtown came in December 1997, first into what is now Capital One Arena, and that same season the Capitals reached their first Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Detroit Red Wings. Another twenty years passed — and a switch back to the original red, white and blue in 2007 — before the wait ended. In 2018 Washington beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4–1 to win the Stanley Cup, closing a 44-year gap between the franchise's birth and its first championship.
Some rivalries run deeper than the standings suggest. Against the New York Islanders, Washington played the Easter Epic of 1987, the longest playoff game in the league's history at the time; against Philadelphia, the tension built through a run of hard-fought playoff series across the 1980s. Both feuds sit alongside a newer one with the Penguins.
Capital One Arena now holds 18,506 for hockey nights, in the heart of a city the club took nearly a quarter-century to actually reach.
