Seattle had wanted an NHL team for years before the league finally agreed to let one in; the franchise took shape only after Seattle Hockey Partners, a group fronted by David Bonderman and including Andy Jassy and Jerry Bruckheimer among its owners, cleared the NHL's expansion process. The league granted the rights in December 2018, and the club became the 32nd team once the ownership group settled a $650 million expansion fee in the spring of 2021, taking the ice for the first time that autumn.

Their rink sits inside a building older than the team itself. Climate Pledge Arena was raised for the 1962 World's Fair and later rebuilt around the Kraken, holding 17,100 for hockey at Seattle Center. Fans there go by "The Deep," a nickname for the atmosphere as much as for the crowd itself.

The Kraken have needed little time to make noise. In their second season, 2022–23, they knocked out the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche, in the first round before the Florida Panthers stopped them in the Western Conference Finals — still the club's deepest run. Their sharpest edge lately is a highway rather than a trophy: games against the Vancouver Canucks along Interstate 5 have taken on the weight of a real rivalry, even without an official name attached to it.

Mark Giordano wore the "C" first, and Jordan Eberle followed as the team's inaugural captain, but it is Matty Beniers who has come to define the club's early identity, taking the Calder Trophy as top rookie in 2023 and giving Seattle a face to build the next chapter of the franchise around.
