Rogers Place sits at the centre of Edmonton. It holds about 18,500 for hockey.

That entry came in 1979, when the World Hockey Association folded and its Oilers were one of four clubs absorbed into the NHL — the only one of the four that kept both its city and its name. The franchise had been founded in 1971, and its real turning point came seven years later, when owner Peter Pocklington pulled Wayne Gretzky away from the Indianapolis Racers. What followed under coach and general manager Glen Sather was five Stanley Cups in seven years, won with Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri and Grant Fuhr among others. Gretzky's 215 points in the 1985–86 season still stands as the franchise record, along with his 1,669 points for the Oilers overall. The dynasty ended almost as suddenly as it began: on 9 August 1988, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. Messier captained the team to one more title in 1990 before the decline set in.

A ten-year playoff drought followed the 2006 Final defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes, broken only once Connor McDavid arrived as the first overall pick in 2015 and Leon Draisaitl grew alongside him. The two have since taken Edmonton back to the Final in both 2024 and 2025, losing on both occasions to the Florida Panthers.

Locally the Oilers are still "The Oil," a name borrowed from the province's industry, and every meeting with the Calgary Flames carries the weight of the Battle of Alberta.
