The arena sits on the Seattle Center campus, where the original Washington State Pavilion once stood for the 1962 Century 21 Exposition. The current building opened on April 21, 1962, designed by architect Paul A. Thiry and built by the Howard S. Wright Companies. After decades of use, the city renovated the structure before closing it again in 2018 for a complete overhaul. The redevelopment cost $1.15 billion, with Populous designing the new interior and Mortenson Construction overseeing the build. The venue reopened on October 19, 2021, and became the world's first net-zero carbon certified arena.

A standard refrigerated ice rink sits at the centre, made from rainwater collected from the arena's roof. The ice is maintained using a zero-GWP ammonia refrigeration system. For basketball the capacity is 18,300, while hockey holds 17,151. The grand opening featured a concert by Coldplay on October 22, 2021, followed the next day by the Seattle Kraken hosting their inaugural home game against the Vancouver Canucks. A record crowd of 18,343 fans attended a Seattle Storm vs. Indiana Fever game on May 22, 2024. The venue is scheduled to host NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship events in 2028.
