Foreign minister Baiba Braze declared the Capitals captain persona non grata indefinitely, alongside boxing official Umar Kremlev, over political criticism.
Latvia has barred Alexander Ovechkin from entering the country, foreign minister Baiba Braze said on X. The ban is indefinite.
Braze said the same order applies to Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association.
Ovechkin told reporters he was surprised by the criticism and added that he plans to live in Russia once his playing career ends.
Ovechkin lifted the Cup with Washington in 2018.
