KeyBank Center
Buffalo, United States
Formerly: Marine Midland Arena, HSBC Arena, First Niagara Center
The arena itself, at 1 Seymour H. Knox III Plaza, is a solid, circular shape that opened in 1996. It replaced the old Memorial Auditorium, which was torn down. The building was built from scratch, not expanded.
The inside holds the Buffalo Sabres. The ice is natural, kept cold by a system that was upgraded around 2012. The seating was adjusted a few years later to squeeze out a few hundred more spots.
The name changes, which is how it is tracked more than anything else. It was Marine Midland Arena, then HSBC Arena, then First Niagara Center, and now KeyBank Center. The latest contract runs for ten years.
The crowd numbers are routine for the league. The highest attendance was for a mixed martial arts event, UFC 210, which drew 17,110 people. That was a long time ago.
The air inside is dry, kept that way by the cooling tower. The surface is two hundred feet long. The fans sit close to the glass. It holds the hockey team and the concerts that come through town.
