A.D. Camacha was set up on 1 August 1978, and the stadium, the Complexo Desportivo da Camacha, holds 3,500.

It took the Madeira regional title in 1989–90 and then again in 2019–20, and won the island cup five times, the first of them in that same 1989–90 season. Camacha won the Terceira Divisão – Série E and earned promotion to the Segunda Divisão, then the third tier of Portuguese football, in 2008–09.

In the 2009–10 Taça de Portugal, the national cup, Camacha reached the last 16 before Pinhalnovense ended it.

Maniche , the former Portugal international, was president of the club's football company (SAD) from 2017 to 2018.

The 2020–21 season ended without a result. Camacha withdrew from the Campeonato de Portugal, the fourth tier, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the games it had played were annulled.
