About

The Taça de Portugal is the premier knockout football cup competition in Portugal, organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). It was founded in 1938, with the first edition played in the 1938–39 season, succeeding the Campeonato de Portugal which was a tournament for regional champions rather than a national cup open to all clubs. The competition sits below the Primeira Liga in the Portuguese football pyramid but is the primary domestic cup, distinct from the Taça da Liga which is restricted to professional clubs from the top two divisions.

The Taça de Portugal is open to all professional and amateur clubs from the top four tiers, as well as winners and runners-up of District Championships. Reserve teams are excluded. Approximately 155–165 clubs participate. The format consists of eight rounds: the first six rounds are single-leg matches, the semi-finals are two-legged, and the final is a single match at the neutral Estádio Nacional in Jamor. Teams enter at different stages based on their league level: lower-tier teams start in the early rounds, Segunda Liga clubs enter in the second round, and Primeira Liga clubs enter in the third round.

There is no promotion or relegation within the cup itself; however, the winner qualifies for the UEFA Europa League and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. Benfica is the most successful club with 26 titles, followed by Porto and Sporting CP. The current holder is Sporting CP, who defeated Benfica 3–1 in the final. A notable upcoming reform for the 2026–27 season includes moving the semi-finals to a single-leg format at a neutral venue.

The competition does not currently have a commercial sponsor in its official name, unlike the league or other sports cups.
