Primeira Liga (Portugal) 2026/27

The Primeira Liga, currently branded as Liga Portugal Betclic, operates as the premier professional football division in Portugal. Established in 1934 by the Portuguese Football Federation, the competition replaced the previous knockout-style Campeonato de Portugal with a structured round-robin format. This shift aimed to raise the standard of play and improve the national team's international competitiveness.

At Level 1 of the Portuguese football pyramid, the league sits above Liga Portugal 2 and Liga 3. The current season features 18 clubs competing in a single table. Each team plays every other side twice, resulting in 34 matches per club. The structure includes no split systems or play-offs for the championship title, meaning the team finishing first is crowned champion outright.

The competition distinguishes itself through its integration of reserve teams into the professional pyramid. While clubs such as Benfica B, Porto B, and Sporting B compete in the second tier, these B-teams face specific restrictions. They cannot be promoted to the Primeira Liga if their parent club remains in the top flight, nor can they occupy European qualification spots intended for the first team. However, they remain subject to relegation to the third tier.

Relegation involves the two lowest-placed teams moving directly to Liga Portugal 2. The 16th-placed Primeira Liga side enters a two-legged play-off against the third-placed team from the second tier to determine the final promotion spot. European qualification follows UEFA coefficients, with the champion entering the Champions League, the runner-up facing qualifiers, and the third and fourth places securing Europa League and Europa Conference League entry respectively. The winner of the Taça de Portugal also qualifies for the Europa League, with spots redistributing if the cup winner qualifies via the league. The league is historically dominated by the 'Big Three': Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP, who have collectively won the vast majority of titles awarded since inception.
