Rio Ave FC

The current ground carries two names in daily use — Estádio do Rio Ave FC on paper, Estádio dos Arcos on the terraces — and holds 5,300. For 44 years the club played at Campo da Avenida, opened on 29 January 1940, barely a year after the team itself existed; the move to the current site closed that chapter.

Rio Ave started life under an unofficial name, Rio Grande, before a group of local enthusiasts formalised things on 18 January 1939 and had the club registered as Rio Ave Futebol Clube that May. The club's two nicknames, Vilacondenses for the town and Rioavistas for the support, reflect the same local anchoring.

What the trophy cabinet shows is a club that has made a habit of climbing back rather than staying at the top: four Liga Portugal 2 titles, in 1985–86, 1995–96, 2002–03 and 2021–22, each one a return ticket to the first division after a spell away. The closest brush with a major title came in 2013–14, when the club reached the Taça de Portugal final, the Taça da Liga final and the Supertaça in the same stretch and lost all three to Benfica, adding to an earlier Taça de Portugal final defeat to Porto in 1983–84.

None of that carries the edge of the fixture with Varzim, up the coast in Póvoa de Varzim — the Dérbi do Mar, a rivalry rooted in competing fishing communities long before either club existed, still settled in front of 5,300 at the Estádio dos Arcos.
