England had never fielded a team at this level when the tournament kicked off in 1948, yet the hosts won the inaugural FIFA Youth Tournament Under-18 that year. UEFA later folded the competition into an Under-19 format, changing the age limit in 2002.

The side answers to The Football Association and trains at St George's Park in Burton upon Trent, though it has no ground of its own for matches. White shirts and blue shorts have stayed the uniform throughout.

Two European Under-19 titles, in 2017 and 2022, came under Lee Carsley. Both tournaments doubled as a proving ground for players who went straight into the senior set-up: Jude Bellingham, Dominic Solanke and Tammy Abraham all passed through the same age group before their full England careers began, following a path already worn by John Terry and Rio Ferdinand a generation earlier.

France has given England its sharpest test at this level, the rivalry heating up in tournament semi-finals and finals rather than in any fixed derby, and settled England's way in the 2016 final by a single goal.

The line still runs back to 1948.
