Portugal have won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship once, in 2018, but the number that follows them through the youth game is ten runners-up finishes, the most recent against Italy in 2023. The gap between winning a final and reaching one keeps showing up in the record: two Under-18 titles arrived in successive years, 1994 and 1999, and before that an even earlier honour, the 1961 UEFA Youth Tournament.

The team itself belongs to no city. It is a category run by the Portuguese Football Federation, founded in 1914, and it exists only to prepare players for the senior side through friendlies and the qualifying rounds of the European Under-19 Championship. Its base is the Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras, opened in 2016 as the federation's training centre for every national team from Under-15 upward.

What the age group is really judged on is who passes through it on the way somewhere else. Rafael Leão wore the shirt seventeen times between 2016 and 2017. Ricardo Quaresma's four appearances, in 2001 and 2002, belong to the same pipeline, brief as they were.

Pedro Espinha works with the group now as goalkeeping coach, one of the few names attached to this level of the setup that stays on record for longer than a single tournament cycle.
