In December 1965 a group of men working at Oy Jakobstads Rostfria Ab put a team together. The firm paid the first bills, and the shortened form of its name, JA-RO, became the club's.

The stay lasted a single season.

The 1992 defeat to MyPa was a 0–2.

In 2024 the club won a promotion play-off to return to the top flight and, in the same year, took the first Ykkösliigacup ever contested, beating SJK Akatemia 1–0 in the final.

Since July 2025 the team has played at the Project Liv Arena, built on the old Länsikenttä training pitch. It seats 3,616 for football.
