About

The Finnish League Cup (Liigacup) is a pre-season football tournament organized by the Veikkausliliga, the top-flight league organization in Finland. Founded in 1994, it serves as competitive preparation for the new season, typically played during the winter months. The competition involves all Veikkausliiga clubs and is distinct from the Finnish Cup, which is the primary national knockout competition organized by the Football Association of Finland (Suomen Palloliitto).

The current format, established in 2023, consists of two groups of six teams. The top two sides from each group advance to single-match semifinals and a final. This structure followed a period of suspension; the tournament was not held between 2017 and 2021, with the 2020 and 2021 editions replaced by a group stage in the Finnish Cup. It returned in 2022 with a three-group setup before switching to the two-group system the following year.

HJK Helsinki holds the record for the most victories, having won six titles in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2015, and 2023. FC Inter Turku is the current reigning champion, having secured the trophy in 2024, 2025, and 2026. The winner receives no European qualification or promotion and relegation implications, a point often clarified to distinguish it from the Finnish Super Cup, which involves the Veikkausliiga champion and Finnish Cup winner.
