AC Oulu

The title that mattered most came in 2020, after ten seasons in which AC Oulu could not get out of the second tier. The press had a name for the run — the "Eternal Ykkönen" — and it stuck because the club had been put there by paperwork rather than by results.

Jyrki Ahola was the coach who ended it.

Football in Oulu had been fragmented before any of this. Four local sides — OLS, OPS, OTP and Tervarit — merged in the autumn of 2002 with a single stated aim, to bring top-level football back to the city.

For its first eight years the team played at the Castrén Stadium out in Välivainio.

The dark blue and white have never brought a Finnish championship. The closest thing to a national trophy came in the 2023 League Cup final, lost 2-1 to HJK, and the Suomen Cup has yielded nothing better than a quarter-final, reached in 2024. What the club has expanded instead is its reach off the pitch: at the start of 2025 it bought the basketball side Oulun NMKY and the volleyball club Oulun Kisko, folding them into a multi-sport organisation under the AC Oulu name.
