HJK Helsinki

Teemu Pukki left Helsinki as a teenage forward with something to prove and came home in 2025 with a Premier League career and the Finland captaincy behind him — the kind of return that only makes sense at the club that raised him. He had already worn the shirt once, in 2010 and 2011, and Alexander Ring, another academy graduate, walked back through the same door that year. HJK does not tend to let its own stay away for good.

The club did not start out as a football specialist. Ice hockey, bandy and handball all shared the books before the board settled on the round-ball game alone in 1976. Blue and white go back further still: the colours were adopted in 1909 as a nod to the Finnish flag, replacing an earlier all-white kit. HJK was founded in 1907, and no other Finnish club has won more league titles since — 33 of them — or more Finnish Cups, with 15 sitting in the cabinet.

Money nearly finished the club in the early 1990s. A rescue company, HJK-Klubi Oy, was set up in January 1991 to keep the lights on, and HJK still won the championship the following year regardless. European football has been kinder: the 1998/99 season made it the first, and so far only, Finnish club to reach the Champions League group stage, and 2014/15 brought the same distinction in the Europa League, ahead of three straight seasons in the Conference League group stage.

Across the city, HIFK supplies the fixture that actually matters, the Stadin derby, rooted in the old divide between Finnish- and Swedish-speaking Helsinki, with the Stadin herruus cup going to whichever side takes the season series. Home games are played at Bolt Arena, a 10,770-seat ground known in earlier years as Töölö Football Stadium and then Sonera Stadium.
