Kansallinen Liiga (Finland) 2026/27

The Kansallinen Liiga stands as the elite tier of women’s football in Finland. Organised by the Football Association of Finland, the competition has a history predating the men’s elite flight, tracing its roots to 1971 before establishing a continuous league series in 1974. It adopted its current name in 2020, having previously operated as the Naisten Liiga.

The structure differs from many other Nordic leagues through its split-phase design. The season comprises a regular run of 14 matches where every club plays each other twice. Following this, the table divides into two streams: a championship round for the leaders and a qualification round for the remainder. This arrangement directly impacts promotion, as the lower half teams engage in a play-off against the second-tier Kansallinen Ykkönen. The top two sides from this double round-robin qualification series secure promotion, while the bottom two face relegation. This system replaced an earlier model of automatic promotion and relegation.

HJK dominates the historical record with 24 titles, significantly more than its nearest rivals. The league currently features eight clubs, a reduction from 10 in the previous campaign. Participants include established names such as Åland United and Ilves alongside KuPS Women and HPS Women. The format ensures that every match carries weight, particularly for clubs hovering near the split point or the relegation zone.

The distinction from the men’s Veikkausliiga is structural as well as temporal. While both competitions utilise a post-regular season split, the men’s game typically involves 12 teams dividing into two groups of six. The women’s competition operates with fewer participants, creating a tighter contest for the title and a more direct link to the second division through the integrated qualification series. This setup ensures that the battle for survival is played out against teams from the tier below, rather than relying on a separate final relegation match-up.
