JyPK

Jyväskylä sits in central Finland, a university town of lakes and ridges, and the ground the football club calls home is built into one of them. Harjun stadion lies on the Harju ridge above the centre, reached on foot by a long flight of steps, and it holds 5,576 — a figure that stopped meaning much for the men's game here decades ago, but still frames what JyPK does now.

The club's origins go back to 1945, when Jyväskylä Pallotoveri put out a men's side. That thread ran for close to half a century and then stopped: in 1992 and 1993 the men merged with JyP-77 to form FC JJK, and what remained under the JyPK name were the women's and youth sections. Plenty of clubs lose a first team and fade. This one carried on with what was left, and that decision is why there is anything to write about.

What was left turned out to be the older story anyway. The women's line in Jyväskylä traces back to 1952, when the team played as Jyväskylän Palloilijat — seven years after the men's foundation date that usually gets printed first, and still going long after it stopped applying.

Today JyPK plays in the Kansallinen Liiga, the top tier of the women's game in Finland, known as Naisten Liiga before the rebrand. There are no league titles and no Suomen Cup wins to set out; the club's record in the cup is one of turning up, season after season, and taking its chances in a straight knockout against sides with more behind them.

The office is a flat address on Kauppakatu, in the middle of town, a few minutes from the steps up to the ridge. From the merger that took the men's team away to the present day: 33 years, and the badge is still on the pitch.
