None of that identity, though, belongs separately to the Under-21 side: it has no badge of its own, no colours of its own, no legal existence apart from Fleetwood Town F.C. Its players are signed to the first team.

The senior club's own lineage is unusually layered for its age. Football in the town dates back to 1908. The current entity is the fourth to carry the Fleetwood name, refounded in 1997 as Fleetwood Wanderers and renamed Fleetwood Town in 2002. The U21s inherited that short, modern history rather than the older one.

What an age-group side is judged on is who passes through it. Jamie Vardy came up through the academy before leaving for Leicester City in 2012.

The development side itself plays in the Professional Development League and the Premier League Cup. Its home is Highbury Stadium.
