Gabčíkovo

Ľubomír Luhový coached the side that played under the name OFC Russel Gabčíkovo, taking charge between 2013 and 2015, before the license that carries the team today even existed. What he ran was still the old town club, one whose football dated back to 1923, when soldiers from the French Foreign Legion are said to have first organised the game in the town. That club, TJ OFC Gabčíkovo, closed in 2016. In its final years it reached third place in the 3. Liga Západ, in the 2014–15 season.

The following year, ŠK Senec found itself unable to fund its spring fixtures and shifted them to Gabčíkovo. ŠK 1923 Gabčíkovo took shape out of that arrangement, buying the license and taking up residence at the 1,000-seat Štadión Gabčíkovo from the 2016–17 season. It has stayed in the third tier's Západ division ever since.

Two fixtures give the season its edge. Against DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda, or the reserve side that carries its name, the games fall under cup and regional league rules and get called a district derby. Against TJ Družstevník Veľké Ludince, across the flat expanse of Žitný ostrov, it is the Malé derby, the little derby.

Before either club, before Luhový, there was Gennadij Salov, a defender who had played for the Soviet Union and finished his career out on the pitch at Gabčíkovo.
