Maastricht sits in the narrow strip of Dutch Limburg wedged between Belgium and Germany, closer to Brussels and Aachen than to Amsterdam, and MVV has always carried that border-town identity into its rivalries more than its trophy cabinet.

That rescue came in the mid-1980s, after debts reached 4.5 million guilders and businessman Leon Melchior helped broker a restructuring alongside the municipality. It set the pattern for the following decades: a yo-yo club, bouncing between the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie through the 1970s, 80s and 90s, winning the second tier outright in 1983/84 and 1996/97, and going up a third time in 1987/88 by winning the promotion play-offs despite finishing only third.

The nickname Sterrendragers, wearers of stars, comes straight off the city's coat of arms, whose five-pointed star sits in the club badge; supporters more often just call it Us MVV'ke.

Derby days mean Roda JC Kerkrade, the Limburgs derby, framed locally as Maastricht's Burgundian self-image against Kerkrade's more Germanic one.
