«De Zwarte Schapen»
Almere City's fiercest fixture crosses the water rather than the town line. The Markermeer derby against FC Volendam takes its name from the lake separating the two towns.
The club's roots go back to 1959, when a side called De Zwarte Schapen was founded in Amsterdam. It moved to Almere in 1995, working through a string of names — Argonaut-Zwarte Schapen, FC Sloterpas, Sporting Flevoland — before becoming the football section of the omnisports body Omniworld on 14 September 2001. The current name, Almere City FC, was adopted only in 2010.
For most of its history the club sat below the Eredivisie, so 2023 stood apart: Almere City beat FC Emmen 4-1 on aggregate in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie play-offs to reach the top flight for the first time.
The stay in the Eredivisie lasted two seasons. Almere City went back down to the Eerste Divisie in 2025, and the same year brought a change of ownership, with the Japanese company Yanmar taking control — its name already carried by the club's home ground, the Yanmar Stadion, which holds 4,501.
