Ovarense

The derby vareiro belongs to Ovarense and S.C. Esmoriz, two clubs from the same municipality. A.R.C.S. São Vicente de Pereira gives them a second, more local quarrel.

Founded on 19 December 1921 in Ovar, the club carries the nickname Alvinegra alongside a red-and-white kit, and locals also call it Vareiros, after the town itself. Its honours sit below the level of the Portuguese top flight: two Segunda Divisão B titles, in 1990–91 and 1999–2000, and a Terceira Divisão crown in 1949–50.

The strongest spell for producing players came in the 1990s, when Pedro Emanuel wore the shirt before moving on to a career that included a Champions League win with Porto. Rui Pataca and Jaime Mercês passed through the same dressing room in that period, both later capped for the national side.

Matches are played at the Estádio Marques da Silva, which holds 3,200. It is a modest ground for a club whose identity has always been defined less by what it has won than by who it plays against on derby day, when Esmoriz comes to town and the concelho stops to watch.
